Chapter 11
âIâm ready to go home,â Jennifer stated over breakfast with her sister and niece later that morning. She didnât want to think about Calumâs mouth, his hands, his lovemaking, and how it had made her lose her sanity. And she wasnât going to scare them about the thug phone call. Bret was still on the run. All they had was Jenniferâs phone number. She wasnât scared for herself, head chefs were far scarier, and she had to deal with them on a daily basis. No, for once in her life, she was going to protect her sister and niece as best she could. Yes, she was definitely leaving, this was just one more reason to do so. And as soon as she was back in London, sheâd call the half-wits and tell them to give her a bit more time to get the money together.
âWeâre not ready,â Sofie stated flatly.
âMum!â Claudia wailed.
Sofie chased a cornflake around her bowl. âItâs school holidays. Whatâs the hurry?â
âYou know what this is, Aunt Jen? Mum met this bloke, cop, who looks like Arni Swartse-whatever after she ran into a pole and now theyâre making goo-goo eyes at each other.â
âRan into what pole?â Jennifer raised her eyebrows. âYou donât look hurt â any bruising?â
âHis name is Brock and weâre both fine,â Sofie reassured her. âI happened to nudge a pole, thatâs all. My brain curdled after Muggins here told me that she and Skids were in love.â
Jennifer turned to look at her niece. âThatâd do it.â
âDonât you start, Aunt Jen.â
Jennifer lifted both hands up and shook her head. âI think itâs time we all left.â
âAnd what about Bret?â Sofie cried.
âWhat can any of us do? Heâs on the road to Darwin.â She hoped to God he was. âI refuse to put my life on hold for him, and neither should you. He has my phone number, and probably yours, which means, so do they. Better get a new number. If he or they ring me, Iâll be safe in London...okay?â And sheâd deal with them.
âHeâs never had Claudiaâs and he doesnât have mine,â Sofie pointed out, looking a little sheepish.
âYeah,â Claudia informed. âA brat of a kid threw Mumâs into the loo at school. No oneâs going to fish it out and use it after that.â
âHis punishment was to buy me a new one. Trouble is, it came with a new number, and I havenât had a chance to pass it on to Bret.â
âYouâre safe then.â Jennifer sighed, feeling relieved, kind of. âIâve got to get back, probate will take a while and life goes on. Bills have to be paid, thatâs how it is.â
âUncle Bob gave us money to see us through,â Sofie urged.
âYes, and it will help getting the shopâs rewiring started. Itâs a massive hazard â huge.â Jennifer flung her arms out. âFor the sake of the whole street not going up in flames, it needs doing without delay. Calum is the obvious choice, and Iâm sure he can recommend a plumber.
